Unreal...
I took Cole to the Dr. again yesterday because we have not had good results with the Zantac he is on for reflux. He is now 6 weeks old... I can't believe it! And he's not a "little" baby anymore. He's 11 lb 15.5 oz, in size 2 diapers, and grown out of his newborn clothes.
Anyway...
The Dr. spent a long time talking with me to see if we could figure out what's going on with Cole. We finally decided to start prevacid to help with the reflux. It takes about 4 weeks to get the full effect of the medicine, so we have to hang in there for a while, but hopefully we'll get good results with it. The prevacid is a little tablet that I have to hold in his cheek until it desolves. He didn't seem to mind though - just sucked on my finger. Then the Dr. checked Cole's dirty diaper for blood and found that he does have blood in his stool. :( Poor guy. The blood indicates an allergy - most likely cow's milk or soy protein (but possibly egg or wheat). So guess who's going dairy and soy free??? Yikes. That means anything and everything with milk in it: baked goods with milk, butter, buttermilk or any derivitive thereof, anything with casein or lactose (cow's milk proteins). No cheese, sour cream, ice cream, cream cheese, yogurt... I've even learned that "non dairy" creamer and most margarins have casein and or soy in them. And those "dairy free" veggie slices (immitation cheese)? They have casein in them! Then the soy: no soy sauce, worchestershire, - even peanut butter has soy in it.
The upside? I will have a happier baby, and I'll be eating a pretty good diet myself (fresh fruits, veggies, meats/fish) and pretty much cutting out all processed/prepared things (since most of them have milk or soy). I might lose this baby weight after all! Ha! :) So it will take about 2 weeks for the milk & soy to get completely out of my system, but we should see an improvement in Cole in 2-3 days. I really hope so. And I hope that my milk supply holds out when I return to work because if the kid can't have milk or soy, there isn't a formula he can have.
